Deer Hunting Gear Guide

Deer hunting gear depends on the method. A whitetail stand hunter and a desert Coues hunter need different kits, but a few pieces matter everywhere.

Optics

Binoculars are the most important tool in open country, where most deer are found by glassing. A rangefinder helps judge distance in both the woods and the West. Western hunters often add a spotting scope and a tripod.

Stands and safety

For whitetails, a treestand or ground blind puts a hunter in position. Anyone hunting from a treestand should wear a full-body safety harness and stay connected from the moment they leave the ground.

Clothing and blaze orange

Layered clothing handles cold mornings and warm afternoons. Many states require blaze orange during firearm seasons, so check the rules for each state.

Calls and scent

A grunt call and rattling antlers or a rattle bag help during the rut. Hunting the wind matters more than any scent product.

After the shot

  • A sharp knife, gloves and game bags
  • A drag rope or cart for getting the deer out
  • Tags and a way to mark the harvest as the state requires
